Fear and Greed Index: Reading Crypto Market Sentiment

The Fear and Greed Index is a single number that summarises the entire emotional state of the crypto market. Learn how to use it as a contrarian edge.

Fear and Greed Index: Reading Crypto Market Sentiment

"Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." — Warren Buffett

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index quantifies this principle into a single number from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed). DeepPair displays this live on your dashboard. Here's how to actually use it.

What It Measures

The index combines seven data points:

  1. Volatility (25%) — High volatility = fear
  2. Market Momentum/Volume (25%) — Rising prices on high volume = greed
  3. Social Media (15%) — Bitcoin mentions, sentiment on Twitter/X
  4. Surveys (15%) — Direct polls of crypto community
  5. Bitcoin Dominance (10%) — Rising dominance = fear (fleeing alts to safety)
  6. Google Trends (10%) — Search interest in "Bitcoin crash" vs "Bitcoin buy"

Reading the Zones

Score Zone Market Feeling
0–24 Extreme Fear Panic, capitulation, possible bottoms
25–44 Fear Uncertainty, many on sidelines
45–55 Neutral Balanced market
56–74 Greed FOMO kicking in, rallies extended
75–100 Extreme Greed Euphoria, late buyers, top signals

The Contrarian Approach

Historically, the most reliable buy signals in Bitcoin's history appeared during Extreme Fear readings. The best sell signals appeared during Extreme Greed.

Why? Because sentiment and price move together, but sentiment often overextends. When everyone is panicking, it means most people have already sold. With no sellers left, price has nowhere to go but up.

Practical Application

Extreme Fear (0–24):

  • Consider increasing position size on LONG signals
  • The market is pricing in catastrophe — often overreacting
  • Great time to DCA (Dollar Cost Average) into quality assets

Extreme Greed (75–100):

  • Reduce position size
  • Tighten take profit targets
  • Consider not taking new LONG signals, especially on lower timeframes
  • Be alert for reversal signals from indicators

DeepPair Integration

DeepPair displays the live Fear & Greed Index value directly on your dashboard. Before generating a signal, glance at it. A LONG signal in Extreme Fear territory is higher quality than the same signal in Extreme Greed territory — even with identical indicator readings.

This simple context layer can significantly improve how you filter and act on AI-generated signals.
